Tapeando

Where to eat

Cafe Melo's With ridiculously large portions, yet only 6 things on the menu, the simplicity and quality of this place keeps it popular. It is always packed on the weekends, so I'd recommend going on a weekday afternoon between mealtimes, if possible. Make sure to get the giant croquetas and the pimientos de padrón! There's also a giant sandwich called the zapatilla that's fun to order and share- and is typical of Galicia! Located in the bohemian barrio of Lavapiés.

After eating these beauties, you won't be able to fully enjoy
 croquetas anywhere else!

El Tigre If you just got to Madrid and want a giant Sangria that comes with a huge plate of free tapas, El Tigre is the place to go. It can also be really crowded like Cafe Melo's so try not to go during peak times. Either way, you'll experience the typical crowded bar experience there, and meet a lot of internationals! (Unfortunately, the word got out awhile ago...)

Con 2 Fogones This place is incredible for the care they take in their cooking and presentation of the food. Every time I go I order something different, but am always impressed! It's a small, cute hipster restaurant tucked away between Moncloa and C/ San Bernardo, and is a hidden treasure. I go for their Menu del Día, which changes everyday but always contains something delicious, and includes a drink a dessert. Plus, its affordable- 10,50 euros for incredible food. I've taken all of my visitors there. A must-eat in Madrid!
At Con 2 Fogones with my friends Alison and Ally, visiting from CA.
They loved it too!

La Latina This is a popular area of Madrid to go out for tapas on Sunday afternoons and evenings. When the weather's nicer, there will be people out on the streets and plazas drinking beer, and all the tapas bars will be packed. Go to Cava Baja and Cava Alta to find the streets full of tapas bars. It's also one of the most beautiful areas of the center, in my opinion.

Argentinian Bakery

L' Isola Bella Some of the best take-away pizza you'll find in Madrid (they'll deliver by mo-ped, it's fun to see them speed by on their red motos with pizza boxes strapped in behind)! There are a few sprinkled through the city, but my favorite one is in Malasaña on c/ Espíritu Santo. You can get a pizza for two for 8 euros to go, and eat out on the sitting plaza or in Plaza 2 de Mayo on a warm spring night.

My favorite pizza- the Malasaña. Parmesan, rucola, sun-dried tomatoes, a few dabs of pesto, and a thin crust below.

Carmencita's Bar If you ever just really miss a proper American brunch, this place will save you.

Baobab
You can never go wrong at Baobab's for Senegalese food. They serve gigantic portions  for only 7 euros, and you can easily split! They have a lot of delicious rice dices with vegetables, meat and a spicy sauce. Yumm!
